Stereopsis – Optical meaning and perception of depth | Isolani Skip to main content

Stereopsis

Stereopsis is the visual system’s ability to perceive the depth and relief of objects by integrating the images received from both eyes. It is a fundamental component of three-dimensional vision.

Key features

Stereopsis is based on the slight difference between the images that each eye sends to the visual system. This difference, known as retinal disparity, enables us to gauge the distance of objects and perceive depth in a natural and immediate way.

How does Stereopsis work?

  • Retinal disparity — Every eye sees a slightly different perspective.
  • Binocular fusion — The brain integrates the two images into a single perception.
  • Perception of depth — The difference between the images allows us to estimate distances and elevations.

Relationship with other visual functions

The Stereopsis is closely linked to the stability of binocular vision and the coordination of eye movements.

Importance in everyday life

The Stereopsis helps to improve precision in movement and spatial awareness. It is particularly useful in activities such as driving, sport, manual work and the use of tools that require fine motor coordination.

Optical solutions

When binocular vision is not perfectly stable, certain optical solutions can improve visual comfort and promote a more natural perception of depth.

Isolani Experience

At Isolani Optical Centres, we analyse actual visual behaviour to identify optical solutions that promote natural and comfortable three-dimensional perception, particularly during activities that require precision and coordination.

Ongoing support

The perception of depth can vary over time depending on visual needs. At Isolani Optical Centres, we offer ongoing support through non-medical eye tests and updates to personalised optical solutions.
