Low Vision and Fragile Vision: Visual Aids and Solutions | Isolani

LOW VISION AND FRAGILE VISION

The Isolani Low Vision service is part of the Isolani Experience and is dedicated to people with partial residual vision or fragile vision. Its goal is to improve independence and quality of life through personalised optical solutions, developed in accordance with the patient’s trusted ophthalmologist.

What are the differences?

Low vision

Low vision is a condition of the visual system involving a significant reduction in visual acuity, visual field or both. The causes are linked to age or to ocular conditions diagnosed exclusively by an ophthalmologist.

The reduction in visual acuity or field is often accompanied by lower contrast sensitivity, which can be improved through specific coloured filters.

In Italy, low vision is legally recognised by Law 138/2001, which defines and quantifies visual impairment, from mild low vision to total blindness.

Fragile vision

Fragile vision is a condition involving a major reduction in visual capacity, making complete correction with standard ophthalmic lenses difficult or impossible. It can limit everyday activities and create discomfort.

It mainly affects older people, often with degenerative eye conditions, but it can also affect younger people with hereditary visual-system conditions.

To preserve independence as much as possible, it is important to learn to use compensatory and high-correction aids from the earliest stages, supporting natural adaptation over time.

Medical filters and prismatic lenses

At Isolani Optical Centres, medical filters and prismatic lenses can be applied on prescription from an ophthalmologist as part of the pathway dedicated to people with low vision or fragile vision.

Medical filters are designed to improve contrast perception and visual comfort in specific ocular conditions. The most suitable filter is selected on the basis of the medical prescription and through dedicated trials.

Prismatic lenses are also applied exclusively on the indication of an ophthalmologist and can help optimise the use of residual vision in specific visual needs.

All trials are supported by our specialised technicians, who guide each person toward the solutions best suited to their functional needs.
