Convergence – Optical meaning and near vision | Isolani Skip to main content

Convergence

Convergence is the ability of both eyes to move inwards to focus on a nearby object. It is a fundamental function of binocular vision and contributes to stable and comfortable vision during close-up tasks.

Key features

When looking at objects up close, the eyes must work together to focus on the same point in space. Effective Convergence helps to maintain a single, clear and stable image during activities such as reading, using a computer or carrying out precision work.

Types of Convergence

  • Convergence proximal — Triggered by the perception that the object is nearby.
  • Convergence accommodative — Related to close-up focusing.
  • Convergence fusiva — It maintains the alignment of the images from both eyes.

Relationship with other visual functions

Convergence works in conjunction with other aspects of binocular vision and can affect visual comfort during everyday activities.

Optical solutions

In the field of optical care, certain solutions can help improve visual comfort when Convergence proves challenging during close-up tasks.

  • Office lenses — Optimised for medium and close-range distances.
  • Progressive lenses — To combine multiple focal lengths into a single lens.
  • Prismatic lenses — They can facilitate binocular fusion in selected cases.

Isolani Experience

At Isolani Optical Centres, we analyse actual visual behaviour to identify optical solutions that promote stable and comfortable Convergence, particularly during prolonged close-up activities.

Ongoing support

Vision needs relating to Convergence can change over time. At Isolani Optical Centres, we offer ongoing support through non-medical eye tests, adjustments and updates to your personalised optical solutions.
