What does it mean to see double?
Duplication may be horizontal, vertical or oblique. It may also vary depending on whether one eye is covered, the direction of gaze or the viewing distance. These differences are useful to the specialist, but do not in themselves allow the cause to be determined.
When to see an ophthalmologist
Any new, sudden or as yet unexplained double vision requires assessment by an ophthalmologist. If it occurs alongside pain, a severe headache, trauma or other sudden symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention without delay. Even when the condition is intermittent, diagnosis is not something that can be carried out at an optician’s.
Optical solutions: only following a referral from a specialist
In some cases, the specialist may prescribe optical compensation, including prismatic correction. Prismatic lenses are not a one-size-fits-all solution: the power, orientation and method of use must comply with the prescription. Isolani takes care of the technical execution, the selection of a compatible frame, the centring and the correct fitting of the lenses.
When the prescription specifies lenses that are particularly sensitive to positioning, the Behavioural Centring It helps to assess a person’s posture and actual habits. The tests and checks carried out at our centres are limited to optical and optometric assessments and do not replace medical treatment.
