Glare – Loss of sharpness in bright light | Isolani Skip to main content

Glare

Glare is the reduction in visual acuity caused by bright light or glare that impairs vision. It affects visual comfort and the quality of vision, particularly in very bright environments.

What is Glare?

Glare occurs when a bright light source or a reflection interferes with the eye’s ability to perceive shapes and details clearly. It can be direct, when the light comes from a visible source, or indirect, when it is reflected off surfaces.

  • Glare direct — Caused by bright lights such as sunlight or headlights.
  • Glare indirect — Caused by surfaces that reflect light.
  • Reduction in sharpness — It makes it harder to make out details and outlines.

Why it is important

  • Visual comfort — Too much light can cause discomfort and eye strain.
  • Safety — Essential for driving and dynamic activities.
  • Visual quality — It affects the perception of detail and contrast.
  • Everyday experience — It determines how natural the view is from the outside.
