How is this different from a dark lens?
A dark lens reduces the amount of visible light; a polarising filter, on the other hand, affects light reflected from specific directions. Polarisation, colour, filter category and UV protection are different characteristics: they should be checked on the actual product and not simply inferred from the appearance of the lens.
Where they might be useful
The seaside, driving and outdoor activities are situations in which reflections can be a nuisance. However, the benefit depends on the light, the surface being viewed and the orientation of the lens. Some displays may appear darker or vary in readability depending on the viewing angle: this, too, should be taken into account in everyday use.
Sport and variable lighting
In sport, polarisation is an option, not a rule. For some activities, rapid changes in light, contrast or the ability to read the terrain are more important; lenses may therefore be more suitable photochromic, selective tints or a traditional sunglasses lens.
