What is Dioptre?

The Dioptre expresses the optical power of a lens. It is defined as the reciprocal of the focal length, expressed in metres. Positive values indicate converging lenses; negative values indicate diverging lenses.

• Positive (+) lenses — They correct near-sightedness and are thicker in the centre.
• Negative lenses (–) — They correct long-sightedness and are thicker at the edges.
• Higher values — They indicate a greater need for correction.
