Types of Optical Aberrations

• Spherical aberration — The light at the edges of the lens is focused differently from the light in the centre.
• Chromatic aberration — The different colours of light are focused at slightly different points.
• Coma — Off-centre images appear stretched or ‘tailed’.
• Oblique astigmatism — The images on the sides appear distorted or stretched.
• Field curvature — The image appears sharp in the centre but less so at the edges, or vice versa.
• Sprain — Straight lines appear curved (barrel-shaped or cushion-shaped).
