Focus on Myopia 2023: the official report on the first edition dedicated to controlling the progression of myopia

The event has come to a successful conclusion Focus on Myopia, organised by Istituto Ottico Isolani in collaboration with Hoya and CooperVision and dedicated to the management of myopia progression in children. The event took place on 25 October 2023 in the prestigious setting of Villa Lo Zerbino, in the heart of Genoa, and brought together 109 ophthalmologists and orthoptists from all over Liguria.

The event reaffirms Isolani’s role as a technical partner to the medical profession, committed to promoting a professional, up-to-date and widely accepted approach to the management of progressive myopia.
1. Opening of the proceedings and official welcome addresses
The evening began with the registration of participants and a welcome drink. The Chairwoman Laura Isolani and the Chief Executive Officers Enrico and Elisabetta Gazzo They welcomed those present, thanking the speakers and partner companies for their contribution to the evening.
The introductory presentation officially opened the proceedings, highlighting Isolani’s commitment to collaborating with the medical profession and promoting a professional approach to the management of myopia in children.
2. Speakers and academic papers
The conference was attended by two leading figures in the Ligurian ophthalmology sector:
Dr Massimiliano Serafino
Head of the Ophthalmology Clinical Unit – Gaslini Paediatric Institute.
Prof. Aldo Vagge
Head of the Strabismus, Paediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Genetics Department – San Martino Polyclinic Hospital.
The speakers explored the topic of myopia progression in depth, highlighting the importance of early intervention in childhood and the role of daily habits, such as spending at least two hours a day in natural light.
3. Optical solutions and specialised lenses
Hoya and CooperVision have unveiled their technologies designed to manage the progression of myopia:
• MiYOSMART – ophthalmic lenses designed to slow the progression of myopia (Hoya)
• MiSight 1 Day – specialised contact lenses for the management of progressive myopia (CooperVision)
The companies outlined the optical principles, the results of clinical trials and the practical applications in the sessions dedicated to children.
4. The Isolani Operational Protocol
The final part of the conference was devoted to the operational protocol used by Istituto Ottico Isolani across its 11 opticians’ centres in Liguria, based on the direct experience of over 700 children who have already used these technologies.
The protocol includes:
• specialised optometric assessment
• behavioural alignment
• Simulation Room
• bespoke eyewear design
• monitoring over time
A technical and structured approach that supports the treatment plan set out by the ophthalmologist.
5. Partner organisations and dedicated tools
Also present at the event were CentroStyle, VisioniX e SwissFlex, with stands dedicated to instruments and equipment for ophthalmologists.
6. Conclusions and official video
The conference concluded with a discussion among the participants, confirming the importance of collaboration between ophthalmologists and opticians’ centres in the management of progressive myopia.
