How do varifocal lenses work?

The progressive lenses They incorporate multiple focal lengths within the same lens surface, without the visible line typical of old bifocal lenses. The upper part is normally for distance vision, the central part covers intermediate distances, and the lower part allows you to focus on close-up objects.

The frame is not just an aesthetic choice

The shape, height, tilt, distance from the face and stability of the frame all affect the actual position of the visual zones. A very attractive but unstable frame can constantly shift the point through which you look; a well-balanced choice, on the other hand, allows the lens to remain consistent with the design.

A good progressive lens can be used for many everyday activities, including working on a computer. However, when your work involves spending many hours focusing on a screen, documents and people in the room, a dedicated lens can offer wider fields of view for near and intermediate distances.

My first time with progressive lenses

Modern technology, a well-fitting frame and consistent centring normally make the transition to varifocals much more natural than in the past. However, it does take a few days to get used to the distribution of distances and the new way of positioning your gaze and head.

There is no one-size-fits-all timeframe. If something doesn’t feel quite right, the glasses should be checked again: the fit, alignment and measurements can make a significant difference. Starting when your prescription and needs indicate it may make the transition more gradual, but it is no guarantee of successful adaptation and does not slow down the progression of presbyopia.
